This predictive tool, available at no additional cost to Chartmetric premium subscribers, uses powerful data analytics to help identify artists with strong fan engagement and growth potential.

Why Talent Search? In an industry where discovering the next big star can be daunting, Chartmetric’s Talent Search Tool offers a unique solution by analyzing over 10 million artists’ data. Developed over 18 months, the tool evaluates key signals exhibited by artists that often predict long-term success. Each artist receives a daily score (1-10) across six signals, helping users track and explore emerging talent.

Key Signals Explained:

These signals are divided into two categories: Performance Metrics and Contextual Metrics.

Performance Metrics examine growth trends based on user engagement, consistent growth across platforms, and user curation support. These are rated on a scale from 1 to 10, where a higher score indicates better performance.

Contextual Metrics are open to interpretation by the user and include metrics that assess editorial curation support, trigger cities, international presence, and audience concentration. While these also operate on a 1-10 scale, it’s up to the user to determine whether a high score is desirable. For instance, a low editorial curation score might be seen as beneficial, as it suggests genuine user engagement with the artist on streaming platforms rather than reliance on editorial support.

1. User Engagement

  • Definition: Measures an artist’s engagement by calculating the average likes on their 30 most recent Instagram posts, divided by their follower count.

  • Why it Matters: High engagement indicates a loyal fanbase and strong artist-fan connection.

2. Consistent Growth

  • Definition: Analyzes how reliably an artist’s fanbase expands over time, using Spotify (Popularity, Monthly Listeners) and YouTube (Monthly Views) data.

  • Why it Matters: Artists with consistent growth tend to sustain and build momentum.

3. User Curation

  • Definition: Evaluates how often an artist’s music is added to user-created playlists on Spotify.

  • Why it Matters: A high rate of playlist additions signals fan interest and replay value, a good indicator of artist longevity.

4. Editorial Curation

  • Definition: Tracks the reach of an artist’s placements on editorial playlists on Spotify.

  • Why it Matters: Editorial exposure can significantly boost an artist's popularity and credibility.

5. Trigger Cities

  • Definition: Measures the number of “trigger cities” (cities with high listener growth potential) among an artist's top listener cities on Spotify and YouTube.

  • Why it Matters: Artists popular in trigger cities often experience faster global growth.

6. International Development

  • Definition: Analyzes the geographic diversity of an artist’s listeners, focusing on the concentration or spread of Monthly Listeners by country.

  • Why it Matters: Broader international reach can drive an artist's global recognition and appeal.

7. Audience Concentration

  • Definition: Assesses demographic concentration in an artist’s audience, using data from Instagram and YouTube.

  • Why it Matters: Knowing audience segments can enhance targeted marketing and audience engagement strategies.
